Sherri Woodard Coffey
Bold colors and abstract patterns are the driving force in my work. Whether inspiration comes from the influences of ancient civilizations, forms in nature or modern architectural lines, the result is vibrant color infused with energy. Each piece tells its own story through the interplay of hand-dyed wool yarns and the varying weaving techniques of tapestry, weft-faced ikat, and gradations of color. My home is in Texas, near Fort Worth, where Cowtown is still the nickname of choice. Even though Fort Worth is home to world-renowned art museums, the western heritage and values are still present. All of those elements blend together to be inspirational in my work.
Textiles were always appreciated in my family, and my fiber interest branched out to include textiles from around the world. My “weaving home” was established after making a saddle blanket for my father. I only knew how to dye three colors, but used those in a Fibonacci sequence of stripes that turned out to be quite attractive. With that blanket, I realized that the possibilities of weft-faced weave structures were endless! By dyeing my own yarn, working in tapestry or weft-faced ikat, and using the mathematical principles of design, almost any color and design element is possible—great personal satisfaction and good for the soul!
