Thirteen Moons: Earth Moon with Pleiades
Thirteen Moons: Earth Moon with Pleiades

"The ancient art of weaving, celebrated from the fateful myths of the Greeks to the huge tapestries of the Middle Ages, embodies patience, dedication, rigorous attention -- virtues often diluted in the frantic modern world. By using this old and sometimes forgotten art to portray contemporary subjects -- soaring skyscrapers, cityscapes, abstractions -- I hope to evoke in the viewer an awareness, even if only subconscious, of the lost vital link between the humanity of the distant past and the onrushing present."

I started weaving in 1973 in Corpus Christi, Texas. My boyfriend at the time was an art student who had become involved in sailing. He didn’t want to be stuck in a classroom for the spring semester, so he opted for an independent study project: building a loom. His professor accepted his project with one condition. The loom had to work. As he had absolutely no interest in learning to weave, I learned to weave and wove his project for him. I was hooked! My first piece sold at his student art show under his name.
The loom was an 8-harness counter balance with a 60” weaving width. We moved the loom with us from Texas to Oklahoma, where I sat up a shop weaving and selling rugs, bags, pillows, ponchos, etc. From Oklahoma we and the loom moved to West Virginia, where I learned Overshot and other Colonial weaves and gave birth to a daughter in 1975. From there we moved to Flagstaff, AZ. In Flagstaff I managed and operated The Covered Bridge Weaving Studio & Gallery. I did production weaving and taught classes. On weekends I taught natural dyeing and candle dipping at the community Art Barn.
My daughter and I moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1979. The loom did not move with us. My weaving opportunities became sparse, mostly backstrap and inkle weaving. In 2005 I recommitted to weaving. In 2007 I took a tapestry weaving class in Taos, NM and was hooked again! In 2008 I began to seriously study tapestry weaving with James Koehler. I am still studying with James. I am one of his apprentices, learning (among other things) the art of acid dyeing. My commitment to weaving runs deep.
