Formerly know as Rio Grande Weavers Supply, this company was conceived by Rachel Brown in 1985 as a retail outlet for the Rio Grande® Wheel which had been in production since 1979. In addition to the wheel, a few hand-dyed rug yarns, warp yarns and the newly developed Rio Grande® Loom were offered on a single page price list. Since then our expanded 2250 sq. foot retail space has become a treat for the eyes of any fiber artist. Here you can see Rio Grande® Looms in operation, try out our Rio Grande® Spinning Wheel, choose from wall bins of hundreds of different colors/types of hand-dyed rug, apparel and tapestry yarns, and "talk weaving" with our knowledgeable staff. Or call us toll free.
Much of our space is devoted to our tapestry gallery, where we show tapestries by 20 well-known New Mexico tapestry artists and our weaving studio, where we produce our own rugs, blankets and pillows. Do come and see us next time you are in New Mexico, the "Land of Enchantment."
Rachel Brown, internationally known for her Weaving, Spinning, and Dyeing Book, has been well established in the weaving business in New Mexico for over fourty years. Her efforts have fostered weaving cooperatives and helped raise contemporary tapestry weaving of the Southwest to a recognized style and art form. For her contributions in the craft of weaving she was given a lifetime achievement award at the Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC, in 1993.
