A native of Texas, Bettye began weaving in 1987. "I have always wanted to weave as long as I can remember, even though I never saw a loom or anyone weaving. I think I was born with this desire. " The dream came true for her with the opportunity to study with Karen Huggins at the University of Texas at the Permian Basin for 2 years. But it was at a summer workshop with Rachel Brown in 1990 that she became "hooked" on Rio Grande style weaving, Taos, and the whole weaving community/atmosphere of Northern New Mexico.
A permanent resident of Taos since 1990, Bettye weaves with hand-dyed yarns, exploring geometric tapestry techniques on a large Rio Grande "walking" loom. She is a master dyer and dyes all the rug yarns for Weaving Southwest.
Her work is in private collections all over the United States, from Alaska to New York, and also in Spain. She has taught weaving at Odessa College in Texas and at the Taos Institute of Arts in Taos. Since teaching her husband, Alex George, how to weave and dye, weaving has become a family passion and full time occupation.
She shares her home and studio with her husband, 5 looms, and their dog Ed.
